STAR supports vulnerable Redlanders

STAR Community Service, supported by the Redland City Council COVID-19 Community Organisations Support Grant, is delivering groceries and medication to vulnerable members of the Redlands community. In a streamlined system, the groceries and medication are paid for by the resident and then delivered to their home for free.

Siobhan Hessing Disaster Planning and Operation Redland City Council, Lennie Jackson SMBI Community Champion, Clare Barker SES Local Controller and Community Resilience Coordinator Redland City Council, Marie Dalton SMBI Community Champion, Hilton Travis SMBI Community Champion and Mairead Nothling STAR Community Services met to hand over the laptop and mobile phone donated by Redland Foundation. Equipment like this is a basic need during emergencies, so we extend sincere thanks to Redlands Foundation for their generosity. -

Meeting these community members and chatting with them during our trips, Doug finds very interesting. Doug says, “So many clients have lived through difficult times but still share a smile and a joke with you. Our clients appreciate the service STAR provides for them.”

A couple of years ago, Wieber started as a Volunteer Driver for STAR. Wieber says, “I really enjoy helping our clients. They are like my brothers, sisters, cousins, uncles, aunties, grandfathers and grandmothers to me. We have great conversations. STAR client’s include a great variety of people each with their individual stories.”

STAR is honoured to have Rob Spencer as the Chair of STAR Community Services. Rob joined in 2004 when the Board was newly formed. As STAR grew in size and community involvement, Rob became Chairperson of Board of Directors. STAR’s business model was always about using volunteers and the board ensured that development continued. This thinking has helped, STAR connect with a great group of volunteers throughout the community. Rob believes, “When we consider the number of volunteers who have been with STAR for well over fifteen years, it says a lot about the values, culture, management and focus of the organisation.”

IDPwD is a United Nations sanctioned day that is celebrated internationally. It aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate their achievements and contributions. -
Support Across The Generations

Brisbane (22 November 2019). STAR is holding its first Christmas Appeal to help combat isolation in the Redlands community. Redlands College students jumped into action to start collecting gifts. “Christmas is a time of giving and we all thought it would be wonderful to be able to give to elderly people who are on their own. Everyone was very excited to be a part of supporting others in the community, especially at this time of year” said Redland College’s 2020 School Captain, Lilly Dawson.

Longest Serving Volunteer Driver Retires After 18 Year On Road
