Activities and Hobbies for Retirement

When we retire, we can take the opportunity to do the things we once loved or wanted to do. This can be travelling, starting a new hobby, or simply going out and trying something new. So, what can you do?

Get active

• If you are active, many organisations in your local area can provide great experiences and bring value. Such as multiple dance classes, cooking classes, painting, and even group travel. STAR Community Services offers many opportunities, including STAR Friends, fitness programs, half-day lunch outings, weekly lunch clubs, and more.
• If you are a lover of creative physical activities, The Queensland Ballet, for example, offers ballet and other dance styles for active adults and seniors. Dance can be an amazing social activity that improves your health and enhances cognitive function. This includes the Brisbane City Council offering multiple active activities such as public exercise groups and line dancing.

Cultural and Art Activities

• If you are more inclined towards arts and reading, both the Redlands City Council and the Brisbane City Council offer Book clubs for seniors. This can help you be socially active and combat social isolation, while reading and discussing a range of fine books.
• At STAR, we also offer the Connections Across Generations Biography Program in which a STAR volunteer can speak with you and record your very own biography about your life. • Other activities can include going to local theatre performances at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) and other local theatres, which offer a wide range of discounts for pensioners and concession holders. You can see new or old musicals, plays, and music. This can include the Brisbane Arts Theatre, which often does musicals and plays with a cast of 55 and over. If you want to see or even relive a theatre passion, you can audition. While The Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art offer a range of exhibitions all year round.
