FAQs About starting your Aged Care journey

When you are new to Aged Care, it can be nerve-wracking to understand where you can start your journey. So here are some common questions that can be answered to help you understand this journey.

Can someone help me with my aged care application?

Yes. This person can be a trusted friend, family member, or a community representative. They can help you apply and even be with you at your assessment. But if you are isolated or vulnerable, you can contact Aged Care Advocates to find you a care finder. If you are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, you can also ask for assessment with an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander assessment organisation.

Do I need to wait long for my assessment?

You will wait 2 to 6 weeks after your referral. Yet, total wait times can change depending on your situation. Priority cases like emergencies or hospital discharges can make the process quicker. Regional areas may experience changes in waiting periods.

Where will my assessment take place?

Your assessments are carried out in your own home by a trained assessor. You can also ask to do the assessment at another location, via telehealth or over the phone.

What happens at the assessment?

At the assessment, your assessor will talk about your needs, preferences and wishes, which will then lead to developing your support plan with you.

I have an assessment coming up. How do I prepare for it?

By following four simple steps

  • Have two types of ID; this includes your Medicare Card, either of your choice: a driver's licence, a passport, or a healthcare card.
  • A list of your needs, such as your activities, what you are struggling with, or what you need help with.
  • If you need this for you personally, bring the name and contact details of your GP and a list of any health issues and medications.
  • Have a list of your current support, information about who has been helping you. Such as paid services, friends, or family.
