My Aged Care in 3 Steps

Taking your first steps in your aged care journey can be confusing and overwhelming, but you are not alone. Whether you need a little extra help or more help than others, My Aged Care can be the best place to start.

What is My Aged Care?
My Aged Care is a central portal by Australian Government designed to help older Australians,  find and access government-funded services for their needs. It is a website and a phone number to provide information about available services, assess your needs to determine the right type of care, refer you to the providers in your local area.

Older Australians can start their Aged Care journey with just three simple steps.

1. Contact My Aged Care

The first step is to contact My Aged Care. You can do this online through the My Aged Care website. You will need your Medicare card, contact details, and 15 to 20 minutes to complete the online form.
You can also call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422, and speak to a person.

2. Prepare for your assessment

A trained assessor who will visit your home to give you a face-to-face assessment. For this assessment, you will need some ID documentation and information about your medical history, health, and capabilities, to then help further understand your current needs, such as personal care, social activities, or household tasks.

You’re welcome to bring a support person for this conversation. This can be a friend, family member, or an elder care support worker (for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) or care finder, who can be found for you through My Aged Care.

3. Receive your notice of decision

After your assessment, you will then receive your notice of decision, which is a letter that will outline the outcome of your assessment, along with a copy of your support plan. If you disagree with the outcome of your decision, you are entitled to request an internal review of your decision.

Starting your aged care journey is an important step towards maintaining your wellbeing, quality of life, and independence. By understanding My Aged Care, you can approach every stage with confidence and make the best-informed decisions about the support that is right for you.
