Navigating Your NDIS Plan: Frequently Asked Questions

At STAR, we are committed to supporting people with disability across Redlands, Logan, Ipswich and surrounding areas to live as independently as possible while engaging meaningfully with their communities. Here are some commonly asked questions to help you navigate your NDIS journey.

What is the NDIS?

The NDIS is an Australian Government initiative designed to provide people with disability the support they need to improve their quality of life, pursue their goals, and increase their independence. Whether you're accessing the scheme for the first time or reviewing an existing plan, understanding the ins and outs of the NDIS can feel overwhelming, but you're not alone. STAR is here to help guide you every step of the way.

What is included in my NDIS plan?

Your NDIS plan outlines the specific supports and services approved for you, including funding across categories such as:

  • Core Supports – essential day-to-day supports such as assistance with daily living activities, transport, and personal care.
  • Capacity Building Supports – funding to help you build skills and independence over time, such as training, therapy, and support coordination.
  • Capital Supports – funding for assistive technology, home modifications, and other long-term supports.

How do I make the most of my NDIS funding?

A few tips to help you get the most from your plan:
  • Understand your priorities – identify the supports that matter most to you, whether that's building independence, maintaining mobility, or accessing your community.
  • Track your spending – keep an eye on how your funding is being used to avoid overspending in one area and running short elsewhere in the year.
  • Choose providers who understand your needs – whether you're looking for transport, therapy, or community supports, work with providers who take the time to understand your goals.

Can I access transport services through the NDIS?

Yes. Transport is essential for many people with disability to access employment, education, health services, and community activities. STAR's transport services offer safe, reliable, and affordable options for people living in Redlands, Logan, Ipswich and surrounding areas. Call 07 3821 6699 to get started.

Does STAR provide NDIS services in my area?

Yes, STAR supports NDIS participants aged 18–65 across Redlands, Logan, Ipswich and the surrounding areas. Get in touch to find out how we can support you locally.

How do I get my NDIS funding approved?

Funding is approved through your NDIS planning meeting, where you'll discuss your goals and support needs with a planner or Local Area Coordinator (LAC). Your approved supports are then outlined in your plan. If you're preparing for a planning meeting or plan review, STAR's team can help you think through what to ask for and how to describe your support needs clearly.

What's the difference between a Support Worker and a Support Coordinator?

A Support Worker provides direct, day-to-day assistance, such as help with personal care, household tasks, or getting out into the community.
A Support Coordinator helps you understand and implement your NDIS plan, connecting you with the right providers and making sure your supports work together effectively.

Can I switch NDIS providers if I'm not happy with my current one?

Yes. You have choice and control over who delivers your supports, and you can change providers at any time. If you're considering a change, STAR can talk you through what's involved and how to make the transition smooth.
