Top 5 Questions to Ask at Your My Aged Care Assessment

Preparing for your My Aged Care assessment is one of the most important steps in accessing the support you need to continue living safely and independently in your senior years.

Having a list of questions ready can help you better understand your options, make informed decisions, and ensure your care is tailored to your individual needs and preferences.

Here are five essential questions to ask during your My Aged Care assessment.

1. What services are available to help me reach my goals?

Whether your goal is to remain independent at home, continue attending social activities, stay physically active, or receive help with everyday tasks, your assessor will work with you to develop a personalised support plan.

Ask what services may help you achieve your goals. Depending on your circumstances, this could include:

  • Personal care
  • Domestic assistance
  • Meal preparation
  • Transport services
  • Allied health services
  • Social support
  • Home modifications
  • Respite care

2. What services are available locally, and what are the waiting times?

Knowing which services are available in your local area can help you plan ahead.

Ask your assessor:

  • Which providers operate in my area?
  • Are there waiting lists for the services I need?
  • Can I receive referrals to providers?
  • Are there alternative services available while I wait?

Understanding expected waiting times allows you and your family to make informed decisions and explore interim support if necessary.

3. What support is available for my carer?

If someone regularly assists you, ask what support is available for them. Your assessor can discuss services designed to reduce the physical and emotional demands of caring, including respite care and other carer supports.

4. Are there providers and staff who understand my language, culture, identity, or beliefs?

If your preferred language is not English, or if your cultural background, spiritual beliefs, identity, or life experiences are important to your care, raise this during your assessment.

You may wish to ask:

  • Can I access an interpreter?
  • Are there providers with staff who speak my language?
  • Can I choose services that understand my cultural or religious needs?
  • Are there providers experienced in supporting people with similar backgrounds or identities?

The more your assessor understands your preferences, the better they can help connect you with services that provide culturally safe, respectful, and person-centred care.

5. How can I contact the assessor if I have questions after the assessment?

It's common to think of additional questions once your assessment has finished.

Before your appointment ends, ask:

  • Who should I contact if I have questions?
  • How do I follow up if my circumstances change?
  • What happens if I don't agree with my assessment outcome?
  • When will I receive my support plan and Notice of Decision?

Make the Most of Your Assessment

Your My Aged Care assessment is a conversation. It's an opportunity to discuss your goals, concerns, and the support that will help you live independently and safely.

Before your appointment, consider writing down your questions, gathering any relevant medical information, and inviting a trusted family member, friend, carer, or registered supporter to attend with you if you'd like additional support.

Being prepared helps ensure you leave the assessment with a clear understanding of your options and a support plan that reflects your individual needs, preferences, and goals.
